As the summer is coming to a boil we are feeling the heat of some burning questions.  We came up with some things we just gotta know, and we want to hear some questions from you in the comments section below.

  • Who will win the MASL Ron Newman Cup? Spoiler alert! Let’s not skip to the end before the season even begins, but this does spark some more specific questions.
  • Can the Baltimore Blast pull off a three-peat? The Blast have become more human in the regular season, but they stay one step ahead of the rest of the league.
  • Can the Monterrey Flash defend their erstwhile Newman Cup championship? When we last left the Flash they had just defeated the Blast and raised the trophy and then they were gone for two years.  If their early signings are any indication they will be back in the hunt this year.
  • Can the Milwaukee Wave take the next step?  The Wave have Ian Bennett and Max Ferdinand leading a rapidly improving club and they poached Jonatan Santos back from Cedar Rapids this offseason.
  • Can Soles de Sonora pick up the pieces and remain contenders? After two straight Newman Cup finals losses, the Soles roster is being picked clean.  Diego Reynoso and Damien Garcia have left for Monterrey and Hiram Ruiz and Raymundo Contreras have bolted for the San Diego Sockers.  Furthermore they have yet to re-sign anyone else from last year’s squad.
  • Can the Cedar Rapids Rampage jump into the upper echelon of contenders? The Rampage signed 40-goal scorer Taylor Bond this offseason and he has shown crazy chemistry with Gordy Gurson in a couple national team exhibitions.
  • Can the San Diego Sockers get more out of their stacked roster? The Sockers are one of, if not the most loaded team in the MASL, but they have faltered each of the last four years in their quest for a 15th title.  They have already added Ruiz, Contreras and Peewee Ortega to their star-studded lineup.
  • What will happen to the Kansas City Comets? The Comets have been one of arena soccer’s stalwart franchises, but are currently stuck in ownership limbo.
  • Can Armando Gamboa replenish the Chicago Mustangs…again? The Mustangs have lost top talent before (Nestor Hernandez, Omar Tapia, Bryan Moya, Bofo Bautista), but they have never been this barren. Miguel Vaca was released before the end of last season and Bond (Cedar Rapids), Ortega (San Diego), and Wilo Martinez (Monterrey) have flown the coop.
  • Can the Tacoma Stars rebound from their second half collapse? Some people thought the Stars overperformed with their 13-7 finish in 2015/16 and, sure enough, after a 9-3 start last year they lost seven of their last eight to finish 10-10 and missed the playoffs.
  • Can the Dallas Sidekicks “Return to Greatness”? The Sidekicks made that pledge last year and brought back their original green logo, but their play was reminiscent of the franchise’s first season when they went 12-36 in 1984/85.  The Sidekicks have a good nucleus and should be better than their back-to-back 7-13 finishes.
  • Will the St. Louis Ambush sign any good players? After a 1-19 season, the Ambush ownership said all of the right things.  Everyone seems to be on the same page, but so far the rebuilding effort hasn’t gained any traction.
  • Will the El Paso Coyotes win a game?  After their 0-20 debut season the Coyotes are still looking for a win.  This might be their year.
  • Can anyone break the Kansas City Comets win record or the El Paso Coyotes loss record? The 20-0 Comets (2014/15) and 0-20 Coyotes were perfect and you can’t improve on perfection.  Unless you expand the schedule to 22 games, which is exactly what the MASL has done for 2017/18.
  • Will Franck Tayou play in the MASL this season? The reigning two-time MVP has outdoor aspirations and could put his arena career on the back burner this season, which would be another blow to the Soles, as well as a setback for the league.
  • Will there be arena soccer in Bakersfield? The California city hosted a large crowd at Rabobank Arena for a USNAST/Mexico exhibition, but has been quiet since hinting at an MASL expansion effort.
  • Who will coach the Ontario Fury? Bernie Lilavois vacated the bench to spend less time yelling at Phil Salvagio and more time building his Fury team and growing the sport of arena soccer, but has yet to name a successor.
  • Can Danny Waltman come back from rotator cuff and toe surgery?

  • How will the MASL realign its four divisions with the addition of Rio Grande Valley and Monterrey?  Try to do it, I dare you.
  • Who will win the LMFR championship?  It will likely be a team that has MASL players on their roster, but that doesn’t narrow it down that much.
  • Where will you be able to watch MASL games this season? Nothing is a done deal yet, but the league is looking at options to supplement its online presence beyond YouTube.
  • Will the Flash land another premier outdoor star? The Flash have brought some of the biggest local Liga MX stars onto the turf (Walter Gaitan, Aílton Gonçalves da Silva, Hector Nicanor, Claudio Nunez, Jesus Arellano, Guille Franco and others) and are negotiating with some big names for the upcoming season.

Now it’s your turn.  Shoot us some of your questions in the comments.
