Week 3 in the MASL , like the first two weeks, was largely upset-free and as a result this week’s rankings are again little changed.
There have been some near misses and blown leads. Turlock almost beat Syracuse. Syracuse almost beat San Diego. Syracuse almost beat Ontario. Ontario almost beat Harrisburg. Cedar Rapids almost beat Baltimore. In the end, nothing changed the status quo, but those almost teams are wishing they cashed in on those early season opportunities.
Overall last week, none of the top six teams lost and none of the bottom five teams won. The only change was in the tightly packed middle where Cedar Rapids dropped two spots and Ontario and Florida moved up a spot each. The Rampage have had to open against Milwaukee and Baltimore, two of the top teams in the league, and had to face Florida on less than 24 hours rest, all on the road. Despite losing the latter two games by a single goal, they still find themselves in a big 0-3 hole.
Elsewhere in the rankings there is a log jam. Milwaukee has possibly been the most impressive team, but they have nowhere to go until Monterrey loses a game. St. Louis has been equally disappointing, but they are as low as they can be ranked as long as Rio Grande Valley and Turlock keep losing.
This week could see a shake-up with Monterrey playing Sonora not once, but twice, and the Sockers hosting Ontario. Milwaukee and Kansas City, however, are idle.
