Where has the new millennium gone? One minute we’re partying like it’s 1999 and the next minute we’re into the ’20s. That means we have our own place, but we still come home on the weekends to do laundry.
Turf and Boards has assembled the Team of the Decade, a period that has come to be known as the Arena Era. Kevin Milliken coined the term arena soccer in the late 1990s, but he popularized it at the pro level in 2008 when he founded the Professional Arena Soccer League, which became the Major Arena Soccer League in 2014.
Each of our selections played at least seven seasons and the timeframe we chose was the 2010-11 season through the current MASL season through Monday’s game. We came up with 16 players (including a lopsided number of goalies) and two coaches. Who ya got?
GOALKEEPERS
Diego Reynoso (Saltillo Rancho Seco, Sonora Soles, Monterrey Flash)
Games: 103
Stat Line: 83-14, 5.22 GAA
Championships: 1 (2014-15)
Why he’s here: Reynoso is a cool customer with the ball at his feet, but quick as a cat stopping shots. He has played in all five Ron Newman Cup Finals and has a 20-9 playoff record despite settling for subcampeon status the last four years. His winning percentage is freakish.
Chris Toth (San Diego Sockers, Ontario Fury)
Games: 119
Stat Line: 82-34, 4.61 GAA
Championships: 3 (2010-11, 2011-12, 2012-13)
Awards: Goalkeeper of the Year (2016-17, 2017-18), All-MASL 1st Team (2016-17, 2017-18), All-MASL 3rd Team (2014-15)
Why he’s here: Toth has upheld the legacy of his father Zoltan Toth, both Sockers stars in their own right. When he left San Diego for Ontario last year, he was able to lower the Fury’s GAA by over 1.50 goals from the year before.
William Vanzela (Baltimore Blast)
Games: 133
Stat Line: 100-32, 3.56 GAA
Championships: 4 (2012-13, 2015-16, 2016-17, 2017-18)
Awards: Goalkeeper of the Year (2013-14, 2014-15), All-MISL 1st Team (2013-14), All-MASL 1st Team (2014-15), All-MASL 2nd Team (2015-16, 2016-17), All-MASL 3rd Team (2018-19)
Why he’s here: Vanzela was setting MASL records for GAA until the Blast moved to the hotbox at SECU Arena. Four championships, five All-League appearances, and two Goalkeeper of the Year Awards in his first seven seasons.
Danny Waltman (Missouri Comets, Tacoma Stars)
Games: 185
Stat Line: 107-76, 5.56 GAA
Championships: 1 (2013-14)
Awards: Goalkeeper of the Year (2015-16), All-MASL 1st Team (2015-16), All-MISL 2nd Team (2011-12), All-MASL 2nd Team (2014-15)
Why he’s here: Waltman is one of the most iconic indoor players of the last decade-plus, and one of the most consistent and durable ‘keepers around, as well as being the winningest goalie of the 2010s.
OFFENSE
Vahid Assadpour (Missouri/Kansas City Comets)
Games: 174
Stat Line: 148 goals, 132 assists, 280 points
Championships: 1 (2013-14)
Awards: All-MASL 1st Team (2014-15, 2015-16), All-MISL 2nd Team (2012-13, 2013-14), All-MASL 3rd Team (2016-17)
Why he’s here: Assadpour retired in his prime, but his five All-League appearances and long-time partnership with Leo Gibson secured his place here.
Ian Bennett (Milwaukee Wave)
Games: 199
Stat Line: 313 goals, 85 assists, 398 points
Championships: 3 (2010-11, 2011-12, 2018-19)
Awards: All-MASL 1st Team (2016-17, 2017-18), All-MISL 2nd Team (2013-14), All-MASL 2nd Team (2015-16, 2018-19)
Why he’s here: Bennett seems to get better every year and it’s almost unfathomable that he’s never won an MVP award. He has, however, been named to the All-League Team five of his last six seasons. As much of a goal hawk as he is, he also plays defense and kills penalties.
Kraig Chiles (San Diego Sockers)
Games: 164
Stat Line: 361 goals, 159 assists, 520 points
Championships: 3 (2010-11, 2011-12, 2012-13)
Awards: Most Valuable Player (2010-11, 2011-12, 2012-13), All-PASL 1st Team (2010-11, 2011-12, 2012-13, 2013-14), All-MASL 1st Team (2014-15, 2015-16), All-MASL 2nd Team (2016-17, 2017-18)
Why he’s here: Chiles, is the top scorer of the decade and has been All-League eight of the last nine years, as well as a three-time MVP. One of the smarter forwards in the league, Chiles has goal scoring down to a science.
Tony Donatelli (Baltimore Blast)
Games: 151
Stat Line: 133 goals, 122 assists, 255 points
Championships: 4 (2012-13, 2015-16, 2016-17, 2017-18)
Awards: All-MASL 2nd Team (2017-18), All-MASL 3rd Team (2018-19)
Why he’s here: The Blast have seen a lot of talent come and go, but Donatelli has been a featured player for the last eight years. When he’s not scoring timely goals, Donatelli is often organizing his troops on the field.
Max Ferdinand (Baltimore Blast, Milwaukee Wave)
Games: 195
Stat Line: 156 goals, 190 assists, 346 points
Championships: 2 (2012-13, 2018-19)
Awards: All-MISL 1st Team (2011-12), All-MASL 1st Team (2016-17, 2017-18, 2018-19), All-MASL 3rd Team (2015-16)
Why he’s here: Four 1st Team appearances and maybe the best playmaker of the last decade, Ferdinand is an adept ballhandler and passer, who makes his teammates better players.
Leo Gibson (Missouri/Kansas City Comets)
Games: 191
Stat Line: 234 goals, 209 assists, 443 points
Championships: 1 (2013-14)
Awards: Most Valuable Player (2014-15), All-MISL 1st Team (2010-11, 2012-13, 2013-14), All-MASL 1st Team (2014-15), All-MISL 2nd Team (2011-12), All-MASL 2nd Team (2015-16), All-MASL 3rd Team (2017-18, 2018-19)
Why he’s here: Tied with Chiles for the most All-League appearances in the 2010s, Gibson owns most of the modern Comets scoring records, and set the MASL record for points in a season (98) during his 2014-15 MVP campaign.
Nick Perera (San Diego Sockers, Milwaukee Wave, Ontario Fury, Syracuse Silver Knights, Tacoma Stars)
Games: 174
Stat Line: 189 goals, 162 assists, 351 points
Championships: 2 (2010-11, 2011-12)
Awards: Most Valuable Player (2018-19), All-MASL 1st Team (2018-19), All-MASL 3rd Team (2014-15)
Why he’s here: All eyes are on Perera when he has the ball to see what sick moves he comes up with next. His 80 points last year were the second highest total since the PASL/MASL started in 2008.
Franck Tayou (Las Vegas Legends, Tulsa Revolution, Oxford City of Texas, Sonora Soles, Monterrey Flash, Ontario Fury)
Games: 137
Stat Line: 292 goals, 76 assists, 368 points
Championships: None
Awards: Most Valuable Player (2015-16, 2016-17, 2017-18), All-MASL 1st Team (2015-16, 2016-17, 2017-18), All-MASL 2nd Team (2018-19)
Why he’s here: Tayou is the top goal scorer of the last five years and a three-time MVP. He can beat players one on one, crash the goal for a rebound, or go airborne for a side volley. His strength and deception make him almost impossible to defend.
DEFENSE
Damian Garcia (Rio Grande Valley Flash, Hidalgo La Fiera, Oxford City of Texas, Wichita B-52s, Sonora Soles, Monterrey Flash)
Games: 134
Stat Line: 96 goals, 70 assists, 166 points
Championships: None
Awards: All-MASL 1st Team (2015-16), All-PASL 2nd Team (2012-13), All-MASL 2nd Team (2016-17, 2017-18)
Why he’s here: Always the bridesmaid, Garcia has made five finals appearances with three teams, but has yet to hoist the Cup. One of the top two way players in the league Garcia unquestionably has the most potent left-footed shot.
Pat Healey (Baltimore Blast)
Games: 162
Stat Line: 59 goals, 103, assists, 162 points
Championships: 4 (2012-13, 2015-16, 2016-17, 2017-18)
Awards: Defender of the Year (2014-15, 2015-16), All-MASL 1st Team (2017-18), All-MISL 2nd Team (2010-11, 2012-13), All-MASL 2nd Team (2015-16)
Why he’s here: Healey started his career as a forward, but found success in the back, captaining the Blast to four championships, while winning two Defender of the Year awards, only to retire twice before the age of 33, but is now in his second year as Head Coach of the Harrisburg Heat.
Marcio Leite (Milwaukee Wave)
Games: 155
Stat Line: 113 goals, 157 assists, 270 points
Championships: 3 (2010-11, 2011-12, 2018-19)
Awards: All-MISL 1st Team (2013-14), All-MISL 2nd Team (2011-12), All-MASL 2nd Team (2018-19)
Why he’s here: Leite was one of the first highly touted futsal players to come play pro indoor soccer in the US, and he is now in his 14th season, all with the Wave. He can play all over the field and can break ankles or set up teammates.
John Sosa (Missouri/Kansas City Comets, San Diego Sockers)
Games: 176
Stat Line: 69 goals, 153 assists, 222 points
Championships: 1 (2013-14)
Awards: All-MASL 1st Team (2014-15, 2016-17), All-MASL 2nd Team (2017-18), All-MASL 3rd Team (2015-16)
Why he’s here: A key member of the Comets and Sockers top defensive teams, Sosa is a master of restarts, controls the tempo on both sides of the ball, and was rewarded with four All-League nods.
COACHES
Danny Kelly (Baltimore Blast)
Stat Line: 156-48 .765
Championships: 4 (2012-13, 2015-16, 2016-17, 2017-18)
Awards: Coach of the Year (2010-11, 2012-13, 2013-14)
Why he’s here: Kelly has won year in and year out, no matter who the Blast have on their roster. Since taking over on an interim basis in 2006, Kelly’s Blast have won seven championships, second only to Ron Newman’s 10 indoor titles.
Phil Salvagio (San Diego Sockers)
Stat Line: 150-28 .843
Championships: 3 (2010-11, 2011-12, 2012-13)
Awards: Coach of the Year (2010-11, 2011-12, 2018-19)
Why he’s here: Salvagio, the goalkeeper-turned-owner/Head Coach has had success from Day 1 when he brought the Sockers back from the dead in 2008. Four championships, a 48-game winning streak, 10 playoff appearances in 10 seasons, and the best winning percentage around, puts Salvagio in elite company.
